How to care for your solid wood chess set

A good chess set can last for generations. But only if you take care of it. Here are some simple tips on how to maintain your solid wood chess set so that it stays beautiful and functional for many years to come.

1. Keep it dry and stable

Wood reacts to moisture and temperature, so avoid storing boards and pieces in direct sunlight, near radiators, or in damp rooms like basements. Ideally, your chess set should be in a place with a stable temperature and low humidity.

2. Use a cloth, not chemicals

Dust the board and pieces with a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth. Never use cleaning agents, alcohol or abrasive materials. If you want to give the wood a little extra care, you can use a little wood oil – but only in moderation and only if the wood is not already varnished.

3. Keep the pieces separate and protected

Wooden chess pieces can be damaged by lying down and rolling against each other. Use cloth bags or individual compartments in a box. At Norwald, the pieces are delivered in protective packaging together with cloth bags and a separate storage box.

4. Avoid unnecessary wear and tear

Move the pieces, but don't let them fall. A solid wood chess set can withstand use, but not shock. Use it – but with care. And if it's not being used for a while, pack it up.

A solid wood chess set is more than a game. It is an object with weight and tactility. And with a little maintenance, it can outlast most of today's possessions.
