Our approach
Finding the right chess set
At Norwald in Copenhagen, we set out to create the chess set we had been looking for ourselves.
A set where form, function, materials, and aesthetics come together – where both the game and the craftsmanship feel right. Beautiful, solid, and balanced. Something you notice, but never tire of. Something that lasts – in both expression and use.
We have worked closely with players and enthusiasts along the way and spent time finding the right materials and the right hands to shape them. In the end, this led us to small workshops in India, where some of the world’s most experienced chess makers still keep the tradition alive – in the country where the game was born.

Our view on chess
A game that keeps giving
Chess has been played for more than a thousand years – and it’s still just as relevant. It combines thought and tactics while remaining playful and entertaining.
It challenges the mind – yet requires nothing more than a little quiet and two people willing to play.
We believe chess fits our time well. Not as something solemn, but as a way of being present. It demands focus and works best when you sit face to face – not behind a screen.
That’s the same idea we bring into our work in Copenhagen – where simplicity, function, and longevity guide everything we do.

Our foundation
It all starts with the right wood
We use walnut, boxwood, acacia, and maple – woods with the right weight, structure, and strength for chess. Everything is made by hand in small workshops in India, where the craft is still passed on from generation to generation.
For us in Denmark, it’s not about nostalgia, but about creating something that lasts. Something you want to use – and want to pass on. We make a few things, but we take great care in making them.
