Handmade chess set in solid wood - tournament size 55 x 55 cm
A complete solid wood chess set featuring a 55 × 55 cm walnut and maple board and weighted Staunton pieces in boxwood and acacia. The board’s 60 mm squares and the pieces’ 95 mm king give the set full tournament dimensions.
The board is made from walnut and maple, selected for their strength, durability and natural contrast between the dark and light squares. The pieces are carved from boxwood and acacia. These dense woods give the pieces weight, balance and a timeless appearance.
The knights are carved with particular care and can take up to two hours each to shape. All the pieces are weighted and fitted with felt bases, giving them stability and allowing them to move smoothly across the board.
A chess set designed for regular play, but also to remain on display as part of the home for many years.
Size and playing experience
This is a large, full-size chess set. The board measures 55 × 55 cm, and the combination of 60 mm squares and a 95 mm king provides plenty of space around the pieces and creates a classic, well-proportioned playing surface.
The set is best suited to a table where it can remain on display or be brought out easily for a game. If you prefer a smaller magnetic chess set that can be folded away and taken with you, we recommend our 30 × 30 cm chess set.

Why choose Norwald?
We started Norwald because we wanted to create the chess sets we felt were missing.
Classic chess sets with the right proportions, made from solid wood, with the weight and balance that make them enjoyable to play with. Both our 55 × 55 cm set and the smaller 30 × 30 cm set have been developed with input from some of Denmark’s best chess players.
They are made in northern India, where some of the world’s most experienced chess makers specialise in handcrafted chess boards and pieces.
The goal is simple: to make chess sets we would want to play with ourselves and keep on display – and that are made to last for many years.
